If you were on social media at all yesterday, you couldn't miss the shocking photos of rioters storming the US Capitol building in Washington D.C. Here's what happened.
Save America: Yesterday, thousands of President Trump's supporters congregated in Washington to protest Congress' certification of the presidential election.
- Congressional certification is historically a low-drama, procedural event, but a number of GOP congresspeople lodged a complaint with the election which turned it into a full-day affair.
The storm is coming: As debate was being held, rioters started to storm their way into the Capitol building. Supporters of the President got as far as onto the House and Senate floors, as well as the office's of legislators.
- At around 4pm EST, the President tweeted a video message to rioters asking them to "go home in peace". Many did not feel the message was strong enough and the President's video was removed by Facebook and Twitter.
Later in the day, the FBI and Virginia National Guard arrived on-site to clear rioters from the premises. The site was secured at around 6:00pm.
Bottom line: The siege on the US Capitol is unprecedented and a vivid reminder of the fractured American democracy that President-Elect Joe Biden is inhereting as he prepares to take office.
