What happened: Quebec-based Unither Biologielectronique delivered lungs from Toronto Western Hospital to Toronto General Hospital in a trip that lasted around six minutes.Â
- In 2019, an unmanned drone transported the first organ, a human kidney, to a US hospital for transplant in a 10 minute trip.Â
Why it matters: Time is of the essence when you’re transporting something as fragile as an organ: most organs can only stay outside of the body for up to six hours. Typically, organs are transported through a commercial flight, but those can be prone to delays because of air traffic.Â
In the U.S., for example, around 170 organs between 2014 and 2019 didn’t make it to their destination or were affected by transportation delays. Meanwhile, unmanned drones can cut through that time and get organs to hospitals much more quickly.Â
