How to win at Winners

Ho-ho-hold the phone! There are going to be fewer presents under the tree this year? That’s the sad truth, at least according to Deloitte Canada’s retail holiday outlook, which forecasts Canadians will cut their gift budget by 17% and focus on shopping for deals this holiday season.

If you’re one of the many shoppers looking to take the sting off your January credit card bill, off-price retailers like Winners or Marshall’s are treasure troves for bargain hunters—but you’ll need a good strategy (and some patience) to find the hidden gems: have the patience and a good strategy.

  • Location matters. Not all off-price retailers carry the same selection and if you’re looking for designer at a discount, go to a store in a “fancier” part of town.

  • Do frequent “pop-ins.” There are new items daily, so visiting often is the best way to ensure you miss any must-haves.

  • Don’t sleep on the jewelry display. Considered the most overlooked section, you can find everything from rings to watches to diamond necklaces. And the sales associates don’t work on commission—you can trust their honest opinion.

And if you want to level up your bargain hunting, try thrifting! It requires much more time and patience, but the juice is worth the squeeze for $30 Tiffany & Co. sunglasses.
