Home improvement spending drops. Home Depot cut its outlook for the first time in 14 years as US consumers cut spending on home improvement projects. The retailer blamed poor weather conditions and a price drop in lumber for the decline in sales this year as net income fell to US$3.9 billion from US$4.2 billion during the same period in 2022. Comparable sales fell 4.5%, exceeding the 1.4% drop analysts expected.

Musk stays in the Tesla driver’s seat. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told shareholders he won’t be stepping down as leader of the car company, calling his time as CEO of Twitter a “temporary distraction.” He informed shareholders that Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” software should be ready this year, and the company will start investing in advertising, something it hasn’t done before.

Flair Airlines strikes while the iron’s hot. The budget airline added more flights to the May long weekend schedule as a WestJet pilot strike looms, hoping to help Canadian passengers carry on with their Victoria Day plans. CEO Stephen Jones asked “teams to add additional service as soon as possible at reasonable fares so that passengers are minimally disrupted.”
